In recent years, along with other countries, Croatia has found its place on the global map of pilgrimage routes and the Camino South Istria route, created as a joint product of the South Istria cluster, namely the Tourism Boards of the cities of Pula and Vodnjan and the Municipalities of Fažana, Ližnjan, Medulin and Marčana, will join the existing Camino routes.
The Camino South Istria route covers 193 km and passes through the territories of 2 cities and 4 municipalities. It will be an attractive reason to visit and stay for several days in the area of South Istria, especially before and after the high season.
As in the rest of Europe, the route will be marked with a bright yellow stylised scallop shell – the St. James’s shell – on dark blue background, as a recognizable symbol of the saint. The route will be divided into seven pilgrimage chapters, more precisely seven stages, to be completed in one week, which is the time necessary to truly experience the historical, cultural, and especially sacred heritage immersed in the impressive natural surroundings and amazing urban settings of South Istria.
Everyone who walks the Camino route will get the Camino Pilgrim Passport, also known as a Credencial del Peregrino, and an official document proving they completed the pilgrimage, the Compostela Certificate, issued by the Confraternity of St. James – Croatia. The credential will have place for 18 stamps featuring motifs and colours typical for the location. The Pilgrim Passport and Certificate can be obtained from the tourist information centres of all Tourism Boards of the Cluster and in other locations published on the web portal, while the stamps can be collected along the Camino route.
